Louise Gamble is the publisher and editor of SL magazine, South Africa’s best-loved student culture, music and fashion magazine. She lives in the city, and works in the suburbs. She strongly suggests that out-of-towners stay far far away from the malls and casinos of the north. For fun she reads, eats, cooks, sleeps, explores, drinks whiskey and sits in the Emmarentia Rose Garden (not all at the same time though). She often finds herself apologising to visitors for the lack of cool bars in Joburg.
Her other favourite city is New York City.
Louise’s route between the airport and the city all depends on the traffic, and whether she feels like stopping for groceries in Cyrildene or not.
Follow Louise around Johannesburg… I am kept awake by the sound of The Woods across the road from my apartment (but only if I’m not there making the noise myself), am woken up by the call to mosque, and love to spend my weekends trawling around the city looking for weird ingredients for extravagant dinners. Chinese vegetable from the streets of Cyrildene, boxes of fresh artichokes from Tyrone Fruit & Veg, Italian bubbly from SuperSconto in Orange Grove and Mozambiquan prawns from the Portuguese Fisheries at the Troyeville Hotel..
